Sucrose and cardiovascular disease.

چکیده

Like other speakers today, I propose to confine myself to one manifestation of cardiovascular disease, namely ischaemic heart disease (IHD). It is unlikely that there is any single statement one could make about cardio.irascular disease in gcneral, or about IHD in particular, that would command universaI agreement. The natural history of atherosclerosis, the relationship between atherosclerosis and IHD, the relative prevalence of I H D in different countries, whether there has been a real increase in its prevalence in affluent countries over the past century and if so the size of this increase: these are only a few of the questions about which debate continues. I believe however that there would be widespread if not universal agreement about the following three statements. First, there are several environmental factors that may produce I H D ; among those that have been suggested are cigarette smoking, physical inactivity, stress, and diet. Second, persons suffering from IHD show a wide range of abnormalities, of which one is the common though not universal high level of plasma cholesterol. Third, IHD is associated in varying degree with other diseases such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and peptic ulceration. With these points in mind, let me then summarize the evidence that dietary sucrose is a factor in the aetiology of IHD.

Effect of Sucrose Replacement by Stevia as a Non-Nutritive Sweetener and Bulking Compounds on Physiochemical Properties of Foodstuffs

Background & Aim:   Changes in lifestyle, decrease in physical exercise along with incidence of obesity, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases indicate a need for low calorie formulations. The sweetness of Stevia, a natural sweetener, is estimated to be 300 times as much as that of sugar. Extraction of stevia leaves is considered a promoter of calorie balance and a beneficial part of a healt...

Lipid metabolism and antioxidant status in sucrose vs. potato-fed rats.

OBJECTIVE Consumption of high levels of simple carbohydrates is associated with several metabolic disorders in humans and in laboratory animals, including symptoms of an early stage of metabolic syndrome (syndrome X). This disorder has several cardiovascular risk factors, such as hypertriglyceridemia, and is associated with an increase in oxidative stress. In contrast to sucrose, potato, a sour...

High temporal-resolution phase-contrast MRI demonstrates impaired left-ventricular diastolic relaxation in mice fed a high-fat high-sucrose diet

Background More than one-third of U.S. adults are obese, incurring an increased risk of heart failure. Increased body mass index is associated with left-ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction, which may be one of the pathophysiological links between obesity and heart failure. Mouse models can elucidate molecular mechanisms that underlie cardiovascular disease. In this study we used high tempora...

An accelerated mouse model for atherosclerosis and adipose tissue inflammation

BACKGROUND Obesity and particularly the metabolic syndrome, which is often associated with obesity, combine a major risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Emerging evidence indicate obesity-associated subclinical inflammation primarily originating from adipose tissue as a common cause for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. However, a suitable and well-characterized mouse ...
